Should the current administration continue to fund Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood programs?

Congress is rumored to want to pull the plug on the final years of the marriage funds, or divert it to fatherhood programs. Many of these programs are aimed at helping couples – especially low-income couples – figure out how to create a stable, secure and faithful relationship, i.e., marriage. ”At this time of severe belt-tightening in our country…it really makes a lot of sense to take this cost-effective, preventive approach that will teach couples how to form and sustain healthy marriages” said, Patty Howell, vice president of media relations for the California Healthy Marriages Coalition.

It’s Never Too Late

Over a week ago I posted a link to a new study that found marital distress associated with poorer outcomes for women with breast cancer. The Washington Post ran the story yesterday and the below-noted quote by the study co-author Hae-Chung Yang, a research associate in psychology at Ohio State University caught my attention: 

“Clearly, marital distress is a risk factor for numerous poorer outcomes, and it is never too late to work to improve your marriage, not only for your emotional well-being but also for your health”
