Generation Me Choosing Love over Career and Children over Status

An online survey of 2,000 Elle readers about to turn 30 asked, ’What does a 30-year-old woman want today?’ What they said represents a seismic shift in attitude and lifestyle from the generation before them. They have abandoned career ambition and decided to choose love over work, contentment above the stress of success, marriage and kids above jobs, friends above status. A staggering 80 percent believe 30 is the perfect age to marry, 70 per cent prioritise relationships rather than promotions at work, and 43 per cent say 30 is the best time to have a baby. The annual British Social Attitudes report discovered that fewer than four out of 10 adults aged between 18 and 34 believe that marriage is the best kind of relationship, compared with more than eight out of 10 pensioners. The survey findings came on the heels of another government report that more young Britons will prefer to live together without the benefit of a marriage, which would make wed couples a minority by 2010. Related Link: News Articles

Is Hooking-up Here to Stay?

According to Kathleen Bogle, a professor at La Salle University in Philadelphia who has studied hooking up among college students and is the author of the 2008 book, “Hooking Up: Sex, Dating and Relationships on Campus.”, it’s: the collapse of advanced planning, lopsided gender ratios on campus, delaying marriage, relaxing values and sheer momentum. (Click here for full article)

China, a country with its thousand-year-long traditional style wedding, has seen constant changes in the past decades in how people celebrated marriage. 

Almost every 20-something who was interviewed said they could accept living with their boyfriend or girlfriend before getting married.
